Our competitors in Perth were so annoyed with Sean Rasmussen taking the first 6 positions for the keyword “Perth Internet Marketing Event” that they killed the power to the citigate hotel on Sunday, watch the video below to see what happened:
3 Things I Learnt From Sean Rasmussen
26 February, 2009
I have been touring around Australia with a good friend and Australia’s leading Internet Marketer Sean Rasmussen. It has been a privilege to spend so much time with him and getting to learn some of the strategies he uses to make money online.
As well as being able to take time to talk about Internet Marketing with Sean we have also been able to spend some time together socially. From my experience with him thus far here are 3 things I have learnt from Sean Rasmussen:
1. Value Your Family At Number 1
Sean has 2 great kids and a wonderful wife and not a day goes by without him talking with his family and telling him that he loves them. Whether we are in the middle of a planning session, eating dinner or at an event, Sean always makes time to ring his family or take a call from his family.
From hanging around with Sean I have now made sure that each day that we are apart I call my wife and tell her that I love her. I know it’s such a simple thing to learn, and most of you do this everyday, but it’s very easy to forget to do this every day, especially if you are busy.
2. Rank Your Website At Number 1 In Under 24hrs
In the last 2 live events that we have held for Smart Online Profit Systems Sean has been able to rank number 1 for a keyword in under 24hrs. Not only that, he has targeted 1 keyword to rank on and ended up ranking on multiple keywords.
For example in Brisbane Sean targeted “Brisbane Internet Marketing Bootcamp” and in under 24hrs (actually in less then 2hrs) he was ranking number 1 for:
“Brisbane Internet Marketing Bootcamp”
“Internet Marketing Bootcamp” and number 4 for
“Brisbane Internet Marketing”
In the past I knew this was possible but had a mental block on actually achieving these results. Since meeting Sean I have also been able to get my sites ranking on keywords in under 24hrs simply and easily.
3. Social Media Rocks
I was a late starter to social media, yes I admit it, I held off joining Twitter, Facebook and Digg for as long as possible. Not that I didn’t believe in using these mediums to promote my websites, it’s just I prioritised other activities in my business. Since meeting Sean Rasmussen I have now increased my frequency in using Twitter, Digg and Facebook and in return I now get around 25% of my traffic from social media.
Twitter Your Place For Bushfire News
8 February, 2009
I am sitting in the Sydney airport after spending what has to be the hottest weekend ever in Melbourne. This weekend I have been glued to the news watching the bushfires escalate in Victoria. With over 25 people now confirmed dead and many more missing, this could turn out to be one of the worst bushfire seasons in a very long time.
I have to say I’m also frustrated that www.news.com.au is not keeping me up to date quickly enough (I have family and friends in Victoria who I’m concerned about)… So I’ve turned to what is fast becoming my major news source http://search.twitter.com.
The bushfires are currently one of the most talked about topics on twitter and I am able to get up to date, from the ground reports on the bushfires. Is this the big breakthrough twitter needed in Australia?

The Big Move
10 November, 2008
I’m back in the office this morning after spending a weekend moving house with no internet, no phone and no interruptions! I can’t explain to you in words how happy I am that we paid removalists to pack and move all of our belongings.
In my training courses I am constantly talking about leverage, and how as an internet marketer we need to find ways to leverage our time and our money. Now I mention this because as the decision to have removalists come and move us was a difficult one. We had thoughts going through our head:
will they be as careful as we are in packing?
will they mark the boxes appropriately?
will they check the whole house and leave nothing behind?
Now all of these were valid concerns, but we finally decided to allow the removalists to pack and move everything for us, Here are the major reasons why this was a great idea:
1. They were able to completely pack and move the house in just 2 days. If this was up to Stephanie and I it would probably have taken us a solid week. Firstly, because I am not the most skillful packing person and secondly because I just dislike packing so there would have been a lot of procrastination
2. They brought their own boxes and packing material and all of our most valuable items were packed so securely that nothing could ever break. Let’s face it these guys are professionals, it’s their job to pack and move houses and it most definitely showed
3. The money we spent on the pack and move allowed Stephanie, Matt and I take the night off on Friday and enjoy some lifestyle. On Saturday, which was the actual move day we were able to sleep in, go to town and enjoy some down time while the removalists did all the hard work.
So in summary, by choosing to have the removalists do the work for us we leveraged our money and our time. Keep this in mind when working on tasks that you could leverage yourself out of!
P.S For those interested, here’s a quick video on the unpacking process - haven’t worked out how to leverage this yet!
Counter Intuitive Marketing
2 November, 2008
There has been a lot of talk over the last few months about the “credit crisis” leading to a recession in both Australia, and overseas. The media blitz that started on the weekend of October 10 in Australia, was the biggest movement towards a “recession”.
If you look at Google Trends on the keyword Recession you will notice a big spike in people searching the keyword in the first quarter of 2008. This traffic spike was inspired by the media hype in that time about the unstability of financial markets.
Looking further into the year’s trends you will notice the initial traffic spike recovered in the middle of the year only to spike again in the final quarter of 2008. Again interestingly this spike was inspired by media hype around the word.
Now what I find interesting about this is that we have one of the most unstable econcomic years ever which has resulted in rising running costs for small to medium businesses. What most businesses do in this rising cost markets is decrease their marketing and advertising budget. Which to me is counter intuitive marketing.
Don’t get me wrong, in torrid financial markets I completely endorse small business owners reducing their running costs, but instead or reducing marketing and advertising spends, business owners need to look internally.
Savvy business owners know that some of the biggest and strongest businesses and brands are made in a time of recession. With the fall in demand for advertising, costs of advertising decrease (read my post on the 15% decrease in PPC advertising costs for proof) which means it’s the most cost effective time to invest in your marketing and advertising.
Intead of reducing your marketing and advertising costs you should be embarking on an aggressive marketing and advertising strategy. The media hype at the moment is creating fear in business owners minds. Overcome that fear and remember this famous quote from Warren Buffet:
“Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful.”
Viral Marketing
20 September, 2008
Here’s an example of a guy that took viral marketing to the extreme. His latest video was released on June 20, this year and as of today has been viewed 10,260,833 times - That’s over 10 million views in just 3 months!!!
Below is his latest video, followed by a video about how he got thousands of people all over the world to dance badly with him.
Happy Watching
I Appear To Be Stalled…
8 September, 2008
I was driving from Bathurst to Orange today with Stephanie and I was reminded of when I was learning to drive. As a kid I was not the most coordinated person when it came to anything with an engine.
I was great at sports, fitness and maths but I was horrible at using, operating or fixing anything with an engine. In fact I was banned from mowing the lawn for sometime after I ran over the water meter and blew up the mower, but that’s another story for another day.
Anyway, I was reminded of when I was learning to drive and I had taken some time off school to go for a driving lesson. I was driving down the main street of Echuca in a manual, doing small bunny hops every now and then, when I came across a massive group of my fellow school mates. It just happened to be the day that they were walking down to the movies on a class reward.
I panicked and stalled the car at the roundabout, so I had to go through the process of re-starting the car, which took forever and I ended up stalling the car again. In the end I threw my hands in the air and asked the driving instructor to drive us out of there (it was duel control car).
Now looking back on that situation I know that I could have handled it so much better and not had the embarrassment that followed. For example, I realised I was so focused on what my classmates were thinking and doing that I completely lost focus on my task at hand. If I had only concentrated on driving the car and changing the gears I would not have stalled the car at all.
I just want to remind you that while sometimes it’s interesting to know what other people are doing and to compare yourself to them, it’s not productive. In fact, sometimes it can lead you to lose focus or stall altogether
Don’t Over-Invest In Your House
27 August, 2008
You might think that’s a weird title for a blog post when we are talking about building websites and internet marketing, but this is actually the perfect analogy. Let me explain…
I have talked to many people over the last few days about spending too much time on the visual aspects of their websites. Your website is very much like your house, while it might look great having a gold plated bath in your bathroom, it probably doesn’t make commercial sense to do this. When it comes time to sell your house you wont be able to get the return on investment.
This is very much like your website, you can spend time uploading beautiful photos, making sure all the text is perfectly aligned and that headers are the right colour but ultimately you will end up over-investing in your website.
You need to be emotionally unattached to your website, your website is purely about generating cash flow and is not about winning a beauty contest.
On Track Goal Setting
25 August, 2008
Last week I spent time in our one on one consult to set on track goals with you. These goals are designed to push and challenge you and I can guarantee that you will feel uncomfortable as you work toward these goals.
As your coach it’s my job to put you under pressure, so you can break
through your boundaries and reach new heights, both personally and in your internet business.
It’s important to understand that for the first few weeks, you may not meet your on track goals and this can be both disappointing and frustrating. However, the key here is to examine how you react when you are under pressure and when you feel you don’t have enough knowledge, time, resources, information, etc.
Ask yourself if you are playing above the line (Taking Responsibility) or below the line (laying Blame, making Excuses or Denying). Remember, all the resources you need to be a success online are provided as part of your coaching, the key is to overcome your biggest obstacle… You!
The other thing you will find in any business is that there will be some setbacks along the way. In an offline sense this might be something like Telsta taking 4 weeks to install your phone and internet. Online this may be something like not being accepted by affiliate programs straight away, or not being accepted into an Adclicks program straight away. These setbacks are part of any business and the best thing you can do is to keep moving forward, keep things in perspective and ask for help if you need it.
Once again I’d like to draw your attention to a quote I shared with you last week, from the book Think and Grow Rich…
“The majority of people are ready to throw their arms and purposes overboard, and give up at the first sign of opposition or misfortune. A few carry on DESPITE all opposition until they attain their goal. These few are the Fords, Carnegies, Rockefellers, and Edisons” - Napoleon Hill
Problems Are New Learnings In Disguise
21 August, 2008
We are now entering our second week of one on once coaching and I have been having some amazing coaching calls. It’s great to see how much effort everyone is putting into the program and it’s also amazing to see the commitment level that everyone is showing.
Today I want to talk to you about something you’ll probably come across with any new project or endeavour, whether it’s within this programme or not. When embarking on something new you are going to come across a myriad of new experiences, feelings and challenges. In fact, you’re probably finding this right now as you tackle the tasks within my Internet Coaching Programme.
The majority of the new experiences and challenges you are facing will come from your body and mind resisting change. That’s why your success in this coaching program will come largely from your persistance in achieving your goals.
Napolean Hill said: “The majority of people are ready to throw their arms and purposes overboard, and give up at the first sign of opposition or misfortune. A few carry on DESPITE all opposition until they attain their goal. These few are the Fords, Carnegies, Rockefellers, and Edisons”
When facing new challenges, understand that your success will eventuate when you overcome your resistance to change and tackle it head on. Remember that my team and I are here to support you, so don’t hesitate to head over to the forum and ask questions, or to pick up the phone and call.
Most importantly, don’t hesitate to put up your hand and ask for help if you need it
