I Appear To Be Stalled…

8 September, 2008

I was driving from Bathurst to Orange today with Stephanie and I was reminded of when I was learning to drive.  As a kid I was not the most coordinated person when it came to anything with an engine.

I was great at sports, fitness and maths but I was horrible at using, operating or fixing anything with an engine.  In fact I was banned from mowing the lawn for sometime after I ran over the water meter and blew up the mower, but that’s another story for another day.

Anyway, I was reminded of when I was learning to drive and I had taken some time off school to go for a driving lesson.  I was driving down the main street of Echuca in a manual, doing small bunny hops every now and then, when I came across a massive group of my fellow school mates.  It just happened to be the day that they were walking down to the movies on a class reward.

I panicked and stalled the car at the roundabout, so I had to go through the process of re-starting the car, which took forever and I ended up stalling the car again.  In the end I threw my hands in the air and asked the driving instructor to drive us out of there (it was duel control car).

Now looking back on that situation I know that I could have handled it so much better and not had the embarrassment that followed.  For example, I realised I was so focused on what my classmates were thinking and doing that I completely lost focus on my task at hand.  If I had only concentrated on driving the car and changing the gears I would not have stalled the car at all.

I just want to remind you that while sometimes it’s interesting to know what other people are doing and to compare yourself to them, it’s not productive.  In fact, sometimes it can lead you to lose focus or stall altogether
